New Orleans Mardi Gras Half Marathon

Tomorrow I am headed out of snowy cold Chicago on a trip to New Orleans! I’m meeting a group of friends down there to complete the New Orleans Rock n’ Roll Mardi Gras Half Marathon on Sunday February 13th!

After having such a blast at the Chicago Half Marathon back in August, I decided to register for a destination race! (Not to mention running a race in another city is on my Fitness Bucket List.) The best part is that the weather in New Orleans for race day is supposed to be 64*F and sunny; a nice change from the 2 feet of snow, 3*F temperatures, and negative wind chills here in Chicago!

This will be my first time to New Orleans and what better way to sightsee than to run a race through the city’s streets! According to the race website, “the course winds its way through the stately Garden District before taking St. Charles Avenue heading towards the French Quarter. Runners use historic Decatur St. to run through the French Quarter on their way to Esplanade as it takes runners towards the finish at City Park.” So exciting!

I also have a few other sightseeing things I want to do while I’m in New Orleans for the weekend. Per recommendation from a friend of mine who used to live in New Orleans, here are some of the things I hope to do while I’m there!

  • Ride the free Canal Street Ferry across the Mississippi River to Algiers Point
  • Eat real authentic jambalaya, dirty rice and beans, and redfish
  • Visit Magazine Street for some shopping
  • Ride the street car down St. Charles
  • Try a po-boy and hand grenade on Bourbon Street
  • Get a muffalatta at Central Grocery in the French Quarter
  • And of course hit up the Health and Fitness Expo at the Moriel Convention Center before race day

Any other suggestions? I can’t wait to share pictures from my trip with you guys when I get back!
