Garam Masala

Garam masala, literally meaning “hot spices”, is a blend of a number of spices commonly used to season vegetables, rice, and meat dishes. Garam masala is a mixture of cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, cumin, black pepper, and coriander.

While I recently purchased a pre-made organic blend of garam masala for a recipe I am planning to make next week (Gingery Yukon Gold and Baby Spinach Masala), I actually wanted make my own and still plan to do so when I can find more time. For the time being I am using Frontier Natural Products Organic Garam Masala; however, for those of you who are interested, I did research how to make your own garam masala! garammasala1

What you’ll need:

  • 1/2 cup coriander seeds
  • 1/2 cup cumin seeds
  • 1/4 cup dried curry leaves
  • 1/4 cup black peppercorns
  • 3 whole cloves
  • 2 black cardamom pods
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 bay leaves

Spread all of the ingredients out on a baking sheet and back at 325*F for 15 minutes. Let cool and process in a coffee grinder until a fine powder is formed. Reuse an old empty spice jar to store your garam masala in! This recipe is so easy and even makes a great gift idea!
