I’ve been wanting to join a CSA for a while now, but the logistics of it (cost, amount of food, product predictability, etc.) have been holding us back for years. Until last week. When a friend of mine recommended Irv and Shelly’s Fresh Picks! I actually spoke with a Fresh Picks at the Good Food Festival about my concerns (delivery to someone living in a high rise, produce substitution options, etc.) and quickly became confident that this was a system that would totally work with out lifestyle!
Irv and Shelly live in Chicago and have developed Fresh Picks as a method to make fresh, local, organic produce easily available for residents in Chicago and Milwaukee. They work with independent farmers to deliver their local produce to urban areas. While members of CSA’s typically work directly with farmers, the partnership Fresh Picks have created allows act as a “middle man” for easy delivery and also allows customers to have more control over what they want to receive on a weekly basis while still supporting local growers! The food goes from the farm, to Fresh Picks, to you. To see a list of local farms that Fresh Picks works with click here.
How does it work? Order online at www.freshpicks.com – you can order individual items like produce, meat dairy and eggs or opt for a Fresh Pick Box of a variety of items to be delivered to your home weekly or biweekly. I love that Fresh Picks informs you what you can expect in your box for the upcoming week. This allows me to meal plan what I want to cook during the week ahead of time! I ordered the Fresh Picks Veg/Fruit Box ($30 + shipping) for our first order since I wasn’t confident in my mailroom attendee to keep dairy, meat or eggs safe upon delivery. While I want to start receiving boxes weekly, I decided to just order once and see how it goes. And I’m here to say, everything went according to plan – not a single bump in the road! 🙂
My box arrived this morning as promised and was delivered right to my mailroom (as I had requested on my order form). I picked it up without problem and was thrilled with all of the delicious organic produce I received – 4 Black Radishes, 1 Sweet Potato, 1 bunch Swiss Chard, 1 bunch Butter Lettuce, 1 bag Spinach, 1 bag Watercress, 1 Red Bell Pepper, 1 bulb Garlic, 4 Braeburn Apples, 2 Grapefruit, and 5 Kiwis. I also received a jar of strawberry preserves from Food for Thought as a referral gift! Everything came in a large cooler box with an ice pack to keep it chilled. Next week they will pick up the old box and replace it with a new one. This honestly couldn’t be any easier and I already can’t wait to place my order for next week!
With all my new fresh produce, here is what we have on our menu this week!
- French Toast with Apples, Chicken Sausage and Sage
- Ginger Shrimp with Swiss Chard and Bell Pepper
- Quinoa Black Bean Burgers with Sweet Potato Fries
- Halibut with Garlic Almond Caper Sauce
- Slow-Cooked Beef Barbacoa Tacos
While I desperately want to spend my weekend cooking away in the kitchen, I’ve got to tend to the dishes and laundry that have piled up over the week first!
Did everyone celebrate National Grilled Cheese Day yesterday? We certainly did! 🙂
