Must-Have Kitchen Essentials – Healthy Meal Prep

Healthy meal prep starts with these essential kitchen tools that will help you measure, chop, grate and mix your ingredients for the recipe ahead!

Mise en place is a French culinary phrase meaning “everything in its place.” Every professional chef preps and organizes their ingredients before they start cooking to maximize efficiency in the kitchen. And you should too. Preparing a healthy meal starts with putting everything in its place. Start with gathering the right healthy ingredients first. Then begin the healthy meal prep process by turning to these kitchen tools to ensure each ingredient is measured, chopped, grated, and mixed correctly for the recipe ahead!

1. Calphalon 8″ Chef’s Knife – Nothing is more important t0 your healthy meal prep efforts than a good, high-quality, sharp chef’s knife. You only need one, but it’s nice to have two on hand for convenience.

2. Calphalon Kitchen Shears – Whether you are snipping herbs, opening food packaging, or breaking down poultry, kitchen shears are a necessity for any healthy kitchen – store them somewhere that is quick and easy to access.

3. Calphalon 8″ Serrated Bread Knife – A serrated blade comes in handy to cut through things with a tough exterior, but soft interior – like a loaf of bread (try one of these life-changing seed breads!) or a melon.

4. OXO Good Grips Y Peeler – A peeler is used to peel away unwanted skins from carrots, potatoes and more, but it also comes in handy when making zucchini noodles or crunchy parsnip ribbons!

5. Totally Bamboo Cutting Board – Select cutting boards that are durable and dishwasher safe – like this one! I have two of these and they go through the dishwasher daily. With a little oil treatment once a year, these cutting boards hold up to the challenge!

6. Calphalon Paring Knife – A little paring knife is great to have for smaller, more delicate cutting tasks like hulling strawberries or slicing garlic cloves.

7. Stainless Steel Measuring Cups – You’ll need a set of measuring cups to guide you through any healthy recipe. Look for a durable, dishwasher safe variety like these stainless steel ones.

8. Stainless Steel 6-Piece Measuring Spoon Set – To accompany your measuring cups, you’ll of course need some measuring spoons! Look for a set with 1/8 tsp, 1/4 tsp, 1/2 tsp, 1 tsp, 1/2 Tbsp and 1 Tbsp.

9. Pyrex Prepware 1-cup Measuring Cup – Liquids should be measured in a liquid measuring cup rather than the dry measuring cup set mentioned above. This 1-cup size will meet most needs and it’s microwave safe – which is convenient for recipes requiring you to melt butter or coconut oil first.

10. 4-ounce Porcelain Ramekins – This one might not seem as obvious, but 4-oz ramekins are PERFECT for your healthy meal prep process – they can hold chopped herbs, toasted nuts or any other garnish until the meal is ready. They’re also great for single-serve snacks and desserts!

11. Cuisinart Box Grater – I like a box grater better than a hand grater because it has four sides to slice, grate, zest and shred foods into various sizes.

12. 1-Piece Waiters Corkscrew – Whether you are enjoying a glass of wine or bottle of beer while you cook, this easy-to-store corkscrew will help you enjoy your time in the kitchen!

13. Wooden Pastry Roller – This clever hand tool is great for ensuring pie crusts, pizza dough and no-bake dessert bars are a uniform thickness. It’s also perfect for crushing nuts and crackers for crumbs.

14. Stainless Steel Mixing Bowl – One big mixing bowl like this 3-quart is all you need to accomplish most healthy meal prep tasks, but a variety of sizes (small, medium and large) is also nice to have!

15. Kitchen Towels – Pretty obvious, but worth noting. A kitchen towel that is nearby and easily accessible will help keep your hands clean as you prep.

16. Kitchen Apron – A cute kitchen apron is fashionable and functional. Not only does it protect your clothes from food splatters as you cook, but it one with pockets like this one is great for holding a meat thermometer or your cell phone (if you can’t be away from it and want to avoid spilling food on it).

17. KitchenAid Stainless Steel Meat Tenderizer – A dual-sided meat tenderizer is great for pounding and flattening chicken (the flat surface) and beef (the raised surface). The more surface area the meat has, like in this Healthy Chicken Parmesan recipe, the faster and more even it tends to cook.

18. Wooden French Rolling Pin – I personally like the French rolling pin, which doesn’t have handles, because it’s easier to keep clean.
