Happy Memorial Day! Hope everyone is enjoying the long weekend, I know I sure am! What are your plans for Memorial Day weekend? Here is a recap of what I did!
Friday night I tried out out a new restaurant in River North called La Madia. It is a contemporary pizza restaurant with the most amazing and creative gourmet pizzas and an impressive wine list! We got two delicious pizzas: House-made Fennel Sausage and sweet onions, tomato sauce with mozzarella cheese and Triple Pepperoni, tomato sauce, and mozzarella cheese finished with white truffle oil. Paired of course with a glass of fabulous Malbec!
I loved the fennel sausage, but the pepperoni pizza (pictured above) was actually a little too greasy for my liking. Next time I want to try something a little more exotic from their menu, perhaps the coach farm goat cheese, melted leeks, garlic and pancetta pizza! I absolutely love this restaurant; the atmosphere is always hopping and they even have a cute outdoor patio open in the summer where you can sit to enjoy dinner! I would definitely recommend La Madia to anyone looking for a great dinner date spot or a place to go for a girls night out!
Saturday turned into a day to fix my bike. As mentioned previously, I recently brought my bike up from home to ride around the city this summer. However the bike not only needed air in the tires, but also some tweaking to re-align the brakes and tires. Upon needing assistance to fix these problems, I discovered a great bike shop here in the city; Kozy’s Cyclery.
At Kozy’s they have it all; everything from awesome bikes and cute helmets to helpful staff and four locations throughout the city! I was able to get the parts I needed to fix my bike and plan to ride back to the shop at a later date to buy a light to ride at night and a bike lock.
After spending all of Saturday fixing my bike, I still needed to get some cross-training in for the day. Since the weather was so beautiful I rode downtown to my all-time favorite place to get frozen yogurt, Berry Chill! If you’ve ever been to Pinkberry, it’s basically the same thing. Berry Chill has numerous locations throughout the city and is even open till 2am on Friday and Saturday nights!
Berry Chill yogurt contains no artificial chemicals, contains live active cultures, and is even lactose free! My favorite flavor is Original because it has a mixture of sweet and sour flavors to it like real yogurt. However, Berry Chill also offers other flavors including Chocolate Amaretto, Pina Colada, Pink Guava, and Passion Fruit. Upon selecting your yogurt flavor you then customize your order by choosing toppings from their incredible selection. Toppings include (but are not limited to) fresh fruits such as kiwi, strawberries, papaya, and pineapple, and treats such as granola, crumbled Girl Scour cookies, and popular cereals and candies.
Finally Sunday. Yesterday the weather in Chicago was absolutely gorgeous; sunny and hot! After getting a long-awaited pedicure, it was time for my Sunday long-run of 5 miles. Since the weather was so beautiful I decided to run outside; I ran through the city and down Lake Shore Drive which was packed with sunbathers, beach bums, bikers, roller bladders, and of course other runners. The awesome scenery of the crowd and the lake made the run easier, but I didn’t bring a water bottle with me and out in the heat I became dehydrated quickly. Luckily along the Lake Shore trail there are a few drinking fountains, but next time I should leave better prepared!
After my run I met up with my girlfriends to see Sex and the City 2! Due to my obsession with Sex and the City, I’ve been waiting for this movie to come out since Christmas and I was thrilled to finally be going!
We went to this new theater in Chicago on Roosevelt and Clark called ShowPlace Icon Theatre. The theater is really nice and they have reserved seating, so we bought our tickets in advance to ensure we could get 5 seats all together. The movie was of course fabulous – light-hearted entertainment for anyone who knows and loves Sex and the City. In the spirit of the movie we went out for martinis afterward to a place called Kit Kat Lounge.
Kit Kat Lounge offers over 50 different kinds of martinis and live drag queen entertainment. On Sunday nights, martinis are $5, so I had 2: the Peanut Butter Cup Martini (vodka, creme de cacao, hazelnut liquor, and a splash of cream) and the Samoan Girl Scout Cookie Martini (vodka, coconut rum, cream de cocoa, butter shots liquor, and coconut cream). The Kit Kat Lounge was a fun place to go with the girls, and seemed to be a hot spot for bachelorette parties!
After such a fabulous weekend I was all set to go to the beach today, relax, get some sun, and grill. But, per usual in Chicago, it’s storming on Memorial Day (sigh). I guess I will have to come up with an alternative plan. Dishes, laundry, grocery shopping, and doing homework seem to be like more realistic options for the day. So, after sleeping in until 11am and in the spirit of productivity, let the day begin!
What are you doing for Memorial Day this year?
