Forming Healthy Habits

When it comes to diet and exercise the key to success is to form healthy habits! If you don’t make something a habit, you won’t stick with it. So how do you form healthy habits? There are 3 components you need to take into consideration: knowledge, skills, and desire.

Knowledge: The first component is knowledge. You need to decide what you are going to do and more importantly, why you are going to do it. For example, lets say your goal is to lose 15 pounds, and the healthy habit you want to develop to reach this goal is to exercise more. “Exercising more” is your knowledge, it’s what you are going to do.  Next think about why you are doing this. Is exercising more going to help you lose that 15 pounds, is it going to boost your confidence, is it going to make you stronger and healthier?

Skills: Secondly, you need to have skills. I’m not talking about expertise, but just a general idea about how you plan to do your new habit. You may decide that you will exercise 5 times a week. Even more specifically, you may choose to do cardio for 3 of those days and weight training on the other 2 days. The more specific your habit is, the easier it will be for you to stick to it!

Desire: The last component to forming a healthy habit is desire. You need to have motivation to develop your new habit. You have to WANT to do it. This is the most important component. If you don’t truly want to develop a new healthy habit and you don’t commit to it, nothing will change.
