Summertime calls for drinks with friends and family! While we all know that red wine is a healthy drink option, a glass of red wine does not necessarily say “summertime”. That’s why Eat Chic recommends sangria as a great summer cocktail alternative!
Sangria can be made with either red or white wine, but using red wine will supply you with numerous health benefits. Red wine is rich in antioxidants that help prevent blood clots and artery plaque formation. Red wine also helps raise HDL cholesterol (“good” cholesterol) and prevents LDL cholesterol (“bad” cholesterol) from forming thus loweing your risk for heart disease.
And did we mention all of the healthy fruits that go into making sangria? While the recipe we list only calls for fresh apples, oranges, and lemon, feel free to get creative by adding your own favorite fruits to your sangria such as strawberries, blackberries, or mangos!
- 1 (750-ml) bottle red wine
- 1/4 cup brandy
- 1/4 cup orange flavored liqueur (recommended: triple sec or Grand Marnier)
- 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
- 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/2 orange, thinly sliced
- 1/2 lemon, thinly sliced
- 1 apple, cored, and cut into thin wedges
- 1 (750-ml) bottle sparkling water, chilled
Combine everything but the sparkling water in a large plastic container or glass pitcher. Cover and chill completely (1 to 2 hours). When ready to serve, add the sparkling water and enjoy!
