Are You Getting Enough Sleep?

Studies have shown that adults need betwen 6 to 8 hours of sleep a night. Too little sleep may increase your risk for obesity, depression, diabetes, and memory problems. If if takes you more than 15 minutes to fall asleep at night, try changing your eating habits!

  • Avoid high-fat meals before bedtime
  • Avoid spicy foods: especially if you are prone to heartburn that may cause discomfort when you are trying to sleep
  • Avoid caffiene and alcohol: caffiene lingers in the body for up to 8 hours after consumption and alcohol prevents deeper stages of sleep causing you to wake up more frequently throughout the night
  • Don’t go to bed hungry! Have a high-carb small snack about an hour before your bedtime to help boost your brain’s seratonin activity

  1. A slice of whole-wheat bread or half of a whole-wheat English muffin drizzled with honey
  2. A couple cups of air-popped popcorn
  3. Half a cup of pretzels
  4. A toasted frozen whole-wheat waffle with maple syrup
  5. Half a cup of whole-wheat pasta topped with marinara sauce
  6. Half a cup of oyster crackers and a piece of fruit
  7. A 4-oz baked potato topped with salsa
  8. Canned mandarin oranges sprinkled with crystallized ginger
  9. Strawberries dippped in fat-free chocolate syrup
  10. A small slice of angel food cake topped with fresh berries
